Cleaning the attic is something none of us likes doing for fun. This is usually the area in which we put all of the items we do not need and keep piling them up for a long period of time. After a while, it is even possible that we will not be able to enter that part of our home. However, we should not perceive the task of cleaning the attic as time-consuming and tiring. Instead, we should think about how we are going to feel once we finish the whole process and what the result will be like. Should you do this, you will declutter your attic in no time. Zippy Shell Moving and Storage DMV experts show you how to do it:
Your first step in this process should be planning in advance
In case it has been a long time since you have cleaned your attic, the first thing you should do is to see what its condition is. This means that you should go inside and carefully check what items you have there. Feel free even to make a list of them or to take photos in order to more easily decide what to do with all of them. There certainly are some items you are not going to need and it is advisable to get rid of them. In case they are in good shape, feel free either to donate them or to give them to some of your friends or relatives.
On the other hand, there also are some items you are going to keep. For this reason, you should get new boxes in order to organize everything properly. It is preferable to get plastic containers since they are more durable. Plus, you will not have to worry about moisture or mold. In case you plan on putting there some other, new items, make sure you do not forget about them. If this happens, your plan about organizing your attic is not going to be good and you will have to start from the beginning. If you have a storage unit, think that way and organize your attic the way you would organize your storage unit.
Prepare yourself for making difficult decisions
Something that will be of great help when your goal is to declutter your attic is making difficult decisions. It is probable that a great majority of items in your attic has emotional value. Not a single item can replace them or the memory you get when you see a certain thing. However, this is not a reason to keep all of the items. It is fine to leave some of them, especially those that are not too large. It is a good idea to bear in mind that you will be making room for new memories.
By doing this, it will be much easier for you to give up on items such as your grandmother’s cabinet or your granddaughter’s cradle. You can always take photos of these items and you are not going to forget them. Also, once you declutter your attic, you will see how much space you actually have. You will certainly wonder why you have not done this earlier. So, prepare yourself mentally for what is waiting for you and the whole process will be over before you know it. You may even enjoy decluttering your attic.
Before you declutter your attic, think about how to organize it later
Organizing your attic is quite helpful and useful. You will no longer deal with clutter and you will be able to find everything you need in no time. For this reason, either before you start decluttering it or during the process, think about its organization. Of course, this greatly depends on the size of the attic itself. In case it is not that large, you will probably have to think about a more detailed plan. For example, you will have to put several different types of items in one box and label it properly. On the other hand, if your attic is larger, you will not have to think about how to use each and every inch of it.
For example, you can sort the items in each zone. In this case, you will only have to think about what zones you are going to have. They can be the following: clothes, electronic devices, sports equipment, etc. Once you have your zones and you declutter your attic, feel free to choose one zone at a time and sort the items carefully. In case you are going to add more clothes, make sure you prepare it for long-term storage. By doing this, you will avoid getting them damaged in any way.
These three pieces of advice on how to declutter your attic are crucial. Of course, you can add some more steps to this process but these are the basics. Start from them and you will see that decluttering is not as tiring as you have believed. As a matter of fact, it is possible that you are going to find some items you have not used for years and you will start using them again. Make some room for your new items and remember to use those you have come across regularly. So, the only thing left for you to do now is to think about when you are going to start with this process. Just remember- the sooner you start, the sooner will everything be over!
